Super Mario Run Sprints to the Top of Apple's App Charts
Nintendo's first real mobile title shows the company has legs.
Super Mario Run has been on the Apple App Store for only 12 hours, but it's already dominating the top free charts. Both the Top Free and Top Grossing app lists have Super Mario Run in the #1 slot, showing Nintendo's first foray into mobile gaming is making waves.
Super Mario Run is free to download, which by the charts we can see people are doing in droves. However, taking the lead on the Top Grossing chart means that a lot of those same individuals are eagerly paying the $9.99 one-time in-app purchase to unlock the whole game. To fact the game requires an always-online connection has spiked some controversy, but evidently it's not enough to deter most gamers.
This free-to-try sales method of mobile gaming is relatively rare, with the grand majority of mobile games using free-to-play to entice buyers. However, it seems like Nintendo's decision to have just the one unlock fee is working out perfect for them, and Super Mario Run's lack of timers and in-app premium currency is making it a mobile darling in many mobile gamers' eyes.
