Finding a way out of Creative mode.
Yesterday marked the first entry in my new Minecraft: Pocket Edition diary, and things got off to an interesting start. As mentioned previously, I know little about Minecraft, and had reservations about downloading it. The whole building concept had been lost on me ever since the game arrived on PC some time ago, and I likened it to driving the forklift in Shenmue, a mundane task that only a select group found enjoyable. Turns out, a select group wound up being nearly six million people in 2012 across iOS and Android, so I decided to give it a go.
That said, there are two things I need to clear up.
A.) I'm having a much better time than I thought I would. Don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm being overly critical. I'm a first time player.
B.) It appears I went about doing this the wrong way. My intention was and still is to play Survival over Creative mode, since I'd prefer having the monsters and resource gathering elements. As you'll see, I thought things had been set up correctly, but since the sun never sets in my world and it's population me, a restart seems like the best way to go. The fact that the game labels my world as "Creative" tipped me off.
Of course, I spent another day toiling under the hot virtual sun before realizing this, hence today's entry.
Whenever I encounter mirrors in first-person shooters, I approach them with two questions: will I see my character's reflection, and does the glass break? It's similar to bathrooms in games. Do the toilets flush? Stupid curiosity, but if "yes" is the answer, I give the developers kudos, even if the graphics look terrible. Don't judge me.
Why do I bring this up? Because I chose to do what every new Minecraft player probably does within the first hours of play. Dig a hole, and keep digging to see how far it goes.
Turns out, pretty damn far, and what impressed me the most were the various layers I encountered. Dirt at first, then stone, what appeared to be molten rock and then more stone. At this point, a few ladders would've been prudent, but that defeats the purpose of digging to see if China's on the other side. Hence I kept going.
Apparently, digging too much results in death. Lesson learned.
Today, I wanted a house on the water, as it's something I'll never actually have. And it had to be much bigger than the original and fairly pedestrian home I built yesterday. You figure at this point, I was unaware the Creepers weren't showing up, so the goal was to construct this new place with the quickness.
Here are the front steps. The temptation to just build a dock and some makeshift boat began to creep in, but I managed to stay the course.
Placed the floor. Originally, I was concerned about water getting in or the house floating away. Then I realized how dumb those thoughts were.
You don't see many black-colored homes on the water. People usually go with lighter colors, like blue, white and pink. Not me. Got some walls and windows up. I sure love me some windows.
Virtual books and paintings to add color.
Three front doors. Not the intended decision. More like an architectural snafu, an experiment gone awry.
Laying the roof. Thought about adding a skylight, but how many of those does a grown man need? A lot, apparently.
There it is, my fortress. Not bad, really. It's essentially the same home from yesterday, only bigger, which I suppose was the intended goal all along. Got to walk before you can crawl, right? Was still wondering what the sun's deal was. No monsters? Unlimited resources? Where's the challenge?
This was the moment when I knew something was probably amiss. Can't sleep in the bed because the sun won't go down. Yeah, stuck in Creative mode.
That being the case, I went for a swim to see how that worked. No Minecraft fish? No threat of drowning? You know what means.
Time to dig another hole.
Tomorrow is my first day in Survival mode.
