Bizarre Portable Game Commercials: Episode Two
Written by Chris Buffa on Monday, July 7, 2008
We can't get enough of these strange ads. Check out some of our favorites from around the world.
Atari Lynx
This commercial is awesome for three reasons. First, it pays homage to one of our favorite pastimes, playing video games on the toilet. Second, we lol'd when the kid pulls the 30 foot long Lynx system from his badass denim vest. Third, we think that kid's Tobey Maguire.
Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island
Rule number one of dealing with Yoshi. Whenever you encounter one on the sidewalk, don't ignore him, and never unlock your car. Otherwise, you might have a giant egg on your roof.
Mario Basket 3-on-3 Hoops
No offense to these, umm, talented actors, but neither resembles Mario or Luigi. They can dunk though, and we're pretty sure they could take us in a real basketball game. Ok, probably not.
Gyakuten Saiban 4
If we knew Japanese, we'd be able to figure out why this guy is on top of a building. Perhaps he's a lawyer that lost a big case and now he wants to be street pizza. Maybe he's just so happy about lawyer sims he wants to scream and let everyone know, or perhaps this is a Japanese commercial that doesn't make any sense. We choose the latter.
LocoRoco
As this cute little girl proves, it's impossible playing LocoRoco without singing along. Even we find ourselves tapping our feet and humming those addictive tunes. Too bad people don't find us adorable.
Game Boy
Wii isn't the only Nintendo system marketed towards older people. Nintendo hoped to attract stuffy corporate executives with this retro Game Boy commercial, which suggests they could get old if they stop playing. Hear that old timer? If you don't play Game Boy, you'll die, at least on the inside.
Game Boy Advance
Ninety-nine percent of this commercial is strangely normal for a Japanese ad, so we kept watching and waiting...waiting...waiting for it to get weird. Wait for it...wait for it...annnnnnd they all turn into Nintendo characters. Sweet.
Jeanne D'Arc
These office commercials are hysterical. Sure, they don't show much Jeanne D'Arc gameplay footage. Ok, most of them don't show any footage, but we can't criticize ads that show a guy taking an axe to the forehead and a lance to the rear.
Game Boy Micro
At first, this commercial seems stupid. Yes, of course the tiny mouse will pass up the cheese in favor of the Game Boy Micro. That's not the surprise. It's the fact that the mouse, once it climbs over a wall to reach the portable system, humps its cartridge slot. Actually, that sounds like a good idea.
Batman Returns
Two things bother us about this commercial. First, the game looks nowhere near as exciting as the film. Second, the kid needs a punch to his face. He's way to happy playing such a crappy game. Must be the money in his pocket and his douche haircut.
Atari Lynx
For the most part, there's nothing weird about this one, aside from the announcer proclaiming that the Lynx is the most fun you can hold in your hands. Dear sir, we beg to differ.
