MySims Racing Review

Our Score
What's Hot
Good customization options for both your driver and race car, you can race with others locally and through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
What's Not
Gameplay offers nothing new to the kart racing scene, average sound and a sloppy framerate, irritating fetch quests, limited multiplayer.

Just when we thought we had enough Mario Kart impersonators, another one rolls out of the garage. MySims Racing is the latest in the ongoing kid-friendly series from Electronic Arts, a DS racer where you customize your wee driver and his or her race car. Although it sounds appealing, the actual driving will send you back to Mario.

In it, you cruise around a variety of tracks acquiring up power-ups and knocking out opponents as you race for first place victories, earning various upgrades along the way. However, there's nothing original about the gameplay. The steering, the use of items and even holding down a button to engage in a manual power drift has all been done before and much better.

Even if you don't mind the copy cat gameplay, you'll probably despise the game's frame rate. While MySims Racing features some interesting track designs and cute Sim characters (both the ones you create and the defaults), the action chugs for no apparent reason.

The sound doesn't fare any better. There's loads of Sims gibberish (they speak their own language) that will get on your nerves, along with forgettable sound effects and music.

MySims Racing does have a few options, but none of them are particularly deep. Multiplayer racing is available for up to four people, either locally through multi-cart play (you can race up to two people with a single cart) or connected through the Wi-Fi Connection. However, only Quick Races are available, and they have the same frame rate problems. As for the mission mode, it contains a bunch of lame fetch quests where you find a specific item for a person and bring it back before moving on.

If you already own Mario Kart DS, there's no reason to buy MySims Racing. This is just a sloppily constructed clone with a below-average presentation and been there/done that gameplay. Leave this flat tire on the side of the road.
