The Deer God Is Punishing, But Pretty
By now there are sim games out there for absolutely anything, it seems like: a piece of bread, a goat, showering with fathers (that's a little weird), and more. So why shouldn't there be a deer simulator? Well, technically this game isn't a simulator. It's about a deer god that you happen to be playing as. But The Deer God takes you into the world of the deer and lets you live exactly as it would. And the verdict? It's difficult, but it's gorgeous and worth your time.
You play a hunter who dies after being struck by lightning and is then reincarnated as a deer. As the deer, you run, jump, and gallivant across a gorgeous pixelated landscape. It can be difficult to make certain jumps here and there and sometimes you will be reincarnated as other animals, which doesn't make sense. For instance, you could possibly be reincarnated as an animal that doesn't have the abilities you need to survive, and that means starting over at a different checkpoint if possible.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take a look at the game. I made the mistake of assuming it was another pixelated "retro" title for the sake of being labeled retro, but I ended up having a decent amount of fun with it. I didn't enjoy having to stop and start all the time, but in the end I definitely found that it was fun to play as the hunter turned deer. Perhaps it was the fact that the hunter was turned into a deer and I thought that was a good way to force people to understand that hunting animals for sport is wrong, but I think it was the fact that the deer moves so fast it's freeing to run and jump on the tiny screen of your phone or mobile device. The Deer God is available now if you want to try it for yourself.
