New Lithium-ion Battery from Toshiba
For those who have become grossly annoyed with recharging their handhelds...
Toshiba Corporation announced today that they have developed a new lithium-ion battery capable of recharging 60 times faster than the current general use lithium-ion batteries (widely used in mobile electronics such as the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS). Taking only one minute for an 80% energy recharge, these new batteries also provide performance-boosting improvements in energy density.
Excellent recharging characteristics, however, are not its only performance advantage. The battery has a long life cycle, losing only 1% of capacity after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging, and can operate at very low temperatures.
Toshiba currently has plans to bring the new battery to commercial products in 2006, initially applied in the automotive and industrial sectors. These batteries are likely to become highly beneficial to the mobile electronics industry once they make their way onto the market.
