Doom RPG Coming to Cellphones
Don't worry; it's not April 1st yet...
id Software's John Carmack announced in one of his recent blog entries that he has started the programming for a Doom RPG; and even more unexpected than this is that the title will be available on cellphones.
Carmack does not reveal much about the game, other than it'll be a "sort of Bard's Tale meets Doom", taking place in a 3D world with step based tile movement and combat. Though apparently the game is only a concept demo at the moment, Carmack has talked with the company Jamdat to plan a full-feature title.
The id programmer also managed to address some of the issues presented with gaming on cellphones. "The biggest problem is that Java is really slow," he said. "On a pure cpu / memory / display / communications level, most modern cell phones should be considerably better gaming platforms than a Game Boy Advanced. With Java, on most phones you are left with about the CPU power of an original 4.77 mhz IBM PC, and lousy control over everything."
Other specific details, such as a possible release date, have not been outlined at this time. To read the entire entry, check out John Carmack's blog.
