Hall of Fame: NES (controller) DS Mod

A modder by the name of Hatrix posted on Nintendo Central this tribute to an old-school console: an NES DS. The modder used the actual sticker from an old NES controller for the top cover of the DS. To preserve the NES look inside, vinyl cutouts were placed in the appropriate places.

I give this modder a badge for bravery, considering he was willing to cut up the cover of his DS to make rooms for the buttons (also from the NES controller). While this mod still looks a bit amateur (or maybe it's the fuzzy pictures), it's still a neat idea

Not to be confused with the NES controller DS mod, French modder Kotomi made this NES styled NDS which looks more like the official NES themed GBA. The modder must be a stickler for detail because opened up, the controls look like the original NES controller down to the colored buttons. Even the red lettering on the inside matches that of an NES. If you're thinking of doing an NES themed DS mod and can't do better than this, don't even try.

Hall of Fame: Koopa Troopa Shell DS

Anyone can think of a way to make a DS look like a past console, but it takes creativity to think of a design that looks retro without looking like an NES. This mod belongs in the Hall of Fame not only because it's Super Mario Bro's inspired but also because of the great paint job. The most recognizable part of this mod is the shell design, which must have taken forever, considering the modder had to cut out individual octagons to mask over. The glossy finish of the paint makes it look almost like a professionally done special edition DS.

I would normally say tangerine orange is a bad color for the fat DS, but the color works well in this case. Kotomi (do the French have nothing to do but mod cases and drink wine?) created this mod in the likeness of the Game & Watch Donkey Kong game. At first glance, the closed DS could be mistaken for a closed Game & Watch system. A little more detail could be put on the metallic plates inside to match the Game & Watch, but this mod belongs in the Hall of Fame nonetheless.

Hall of Shame: Leapord Print DS

Maybe it's my bias against leopard print anything, but putting a leopard print on a DS just makes it look extremely cheap. I guess this would be a fitting mod if you're Peggy Bundy and you want something to match your long red nails and leopard print tights.

I don't know whether to laugh or to cry about this mod. The modder clearly had good intentions and was trying very hard to customize his or her DS, but the outcome is just so hideous that I wonder if s/he secretly hates the DS. The paint job inside looks like a first grader stuck his blue and green chewing gum all over the cover. The outside is slightly better, but the color choice still makes this DS an eyesore. If I were stuck on a deserted island and found this DS buried in the sand, I would pile on some more sand to make sure it stays buried. Obviously, this belongs in the Hall of Shame.

Hall of Shame: Duct Tape DS

While not technically a case mod, this duct tape skin for the DS gets an honorable mention in the Case Mod Hall of Shame. Sure, duct tape wallets were cool and all (in junior high) but this skin is just plain ugly.
