EA Mobile Launches EA Sports Mobile Portal
EA Mobile announced today the launch of EA Sports Link - a mobile portal providing both news and mobile content focused around EA's considerable sports empire. The service, live on just Cingular at launch, is EA's first major, non-gaming mobile initiative.
"Sports fans hunger for sports info, stats and news 24/7. With EA Sports Link, these fans are always just one button away from their favorite team's scores, updates, news and games. By creating a singular, feature-packed destination for digital sports content, this groundbreaking service is going to change the way people experience sports and mobile sports content," Michael Marchetti, VP and Chief Operating Officer at EA Mobile said in a statement.
He continued, "We believe that the mobile phone is a perfect platform on which to build sports-themed services and provide content for the ever-growing community of EA Sports fans."
Although a specific roadmap was not revealed, EA did announce plans to expand the service's functionality with a greater social emphasis, including the ability for gamers to "trade information and challenge one another to live games." Right now the service is made up of two major components: a customizable RSS news feeder focused around sports and gaming, and a content catalogue. The cataloguet features device-specific EA Sports material such as games, ring tones, alert tones and wallpapers.
Although not explicitly stated, it seems likely that EA Mobile will roll out more brand-specific EA mobile portals in the future, in order to leverage its console clout in the mobile medium most effectively.
