Gameloft Begins Blackberry Game Development
Gameloft announced today that they are joining the BlackBerry ISV Alliance program, and intends to begin developing and publishing games for RIM's line of Blackberry smartphones. A specific timetable was not announced, but Gameloft did single out Block Breaker Deluxe, Asphalt Urban GT 2, New York Nights, LOST, Midnight Pool and Prince of Persia The Two Thrones as part of the first wave of Gameloft releases.
Gameloft noted the Blackberry's widening mainstream (non-business) appeal and broadening demographic as key drivers of their decision.
"With worldwide brand recognition and millions of loyal users the BlackBerry platform represents a tremendous opportunity for Gameloft," said Michel Guillemot, president, Gameloft. "Given the technology advancements embedded in smartphones such as the BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry 8800 and RIM's rapidly growing customer base, we believe now is the ideal time to bring our quality games to this award-winning platform."
Additionally, unofficial reports from within EA Mobile suggest that an announcement of a significant blackberry development initiative is imminent, which would make both the #1 and #2 mobile game publishers firmly committed to smartphone gaming.
If true, it is likely that other top 10 publishers will follow suit, giving blackberry gamers much more choice than they have ever had before.
