Capcom Releases DS Rosario + Vampire Trailer
A stake through the heart of the DS.
Based on a Shonen Jump manga -- with an anime series that just started airing this month -- the game seems to be a combination of Phoenix Wright style adventure,turn-based combat, 2D fighter, and rhythm based gameplay. The battle system has you complete a mini-game of sorts on the bottom screen, and then you see the fruits of your actions through an animation of your character fighting on the top. Sort of like how completing a combo in Super Puzzle Fighter will net you special and super move animations.
The plot revolves around teenage kid who's grades are apparently so lousy that the only school he can get into is one full of otherworldly creatures. Upon arriving, the vampire equivalent of a high school homecoming queen latches on to him, and things get complicated from there when he discovers that she harbors a dark secret. Like the game, the manga itself also seems to be a mix of parts, highlighting the stereotype of the loser who manages to create a small harem for himself while also maintaining a distinct fantasy/horror setting.
The last game I can think of that had a similar premise was Melty Blood on the PC, but that was a full-fledged fighting game with a story mode on the side, whereas this is an adventure game with fighting and RPG elements. Both feature awkward looking heroes, hot vampire chicks who have a darker, more powerful side to them, and plenty of intrigue.
A domestic release is unlikely given the relative obscurity of the manga, but the premise certainly seems interesting enough to warrant the attention of import veterans.
