Glu Unveils Speed Racer for Mobile
Before Pokemon, Sailormoon and Dragonball, Speed Racer was "the" anime that even non-anime fans knew. Its melodrama and hilariously poor dubbing has made it endure in the cultural consciousness for over three decades now, and some months ago, Warner Bros. announced their plans to revitalize the series with a new film. I'm no film critic, so I'll keep my comments brief and just say that the trailer was likely trying to play up the camp value of the series, so I wouldn't be too worried just yet -- well, maybe John Goodman should have you a little worried. Along with the movie, they'll also be producing a mobile game courtesy of Glu Mobile Inc.
"The SPEED RACER film features key elements that make a great mobile game -- speed, adventure, exciting characters and storyline," said Jill Braff, senior vice president of global publishing, Glu. "As buzz builds for the upcoming film, we're excited to bring a truly engaging game based on this highly anticipated film to the mobile phone."
Little is known about the game itself at this point, but Glu is also set to produce ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers, voice tones and ringbacks along with it.
"Glu has demonstrated its ability to create the highest quality games and make them available to a broad audience of mobile consumers around the world," said Maria Seidman, vice president, sales development, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. "We're excited to see the roll-out of SPEED RACER on the mobile platform and we believe we will benefit from their mobile expertise in reaching SPEED RACER fans around the world on the mobile platform."
