GDC 2008: Second Life Goes Mobile
Life on the road
Vollee announced today that they will be brining Second Life to 3G handsets.
Developed by Linden Lab, Second Life is a life simulator where you (well, technically your avatar) interact with other users in a virtual world. It's more like a glorified chat room than a real game. Still, Second Life managed to hook millions of PC users and spawned many copycats.
Thanks to Vollee's streaming technology, the mobile version will bring Second Life's virtual world to the palm of your hand. To accommodate for the differences between the PC and mobile handsets, Vollee has reformatted the screen in addition to remapping all the buttons to fit a handset.
"What we have developed is a service which, for the first time, allows you to access a rich persistent virtual 3D world the way it is supposed to be experienced on your phone," said Martin Dunsby, CEO, Vollee. "This is a true 'before and after moment' in which mobile is living up to its potential in serving as an always on, connected platform."
