Phil Harrison, President of SCE WWS, Resigns
Uncle Phil, Nooo!
Phil Harrison will no longer be with Sony as of February 29th. He will be resigning from his position as the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
Known for his unique appearance and visionary speeches, Phil Harrison has been working with the Playstation family brand since 1992. He has been through it all with Sony: from the success of the Playstation and Playstation 2 to the initial failure of the PSP and Playstation 3.
"As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry," said Kazuo Hirai. "It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors."
His resignation seems a bit strange, especially after his outspoken comments at GDC 2008 about how the top brass in Japan ignore the importance of the casual market. But I seriously doubt that was the reason for him to leave when you consider that both the PSP Playstation 3 will be gaining momentum in 2008 with mostly hardcore titles.
"The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far," said Phil Harrison. "I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can."
Rumor has it that Phil Harrison will be joining Atari in the near future. Perhaps we will see a tall, balding white guy with a British accent wondering around the Atari space inside the Playstation Home.
