CES 2017: ODG AR Glasses Heat Up Competition for HoloLens
With a wider field of view for a lower price, ODG's AR glasses are competitive with Microsoft's offering.
Microsoft is getting another competitor to its augmented reality HoloLens device. ODG has announced a pair of AR glasses, the R-8 and R-9, that offers similar functionality for a lower price.
Digital Trends reports that the R-8 sports a 40 degree field of view at 720p resolution, and its two front-facing cameras can capture 1080p video. The R-9 is more high-end, with a 50-degree field of view, 1080p resolution, and 4K video recording. They use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and run on an Android 7.0 Nougat-based Reticle OS. They also both use tracking similar to HoloLens, allowing them to place AR objects in physical space. The two devices cost $1,000 and $1,800, respectively.
While those stats may not sound impressive for such a high price tag, keep in mind that Microsoft's HoloLens only has a field of view between 30 and 45 degrees, and costs almost $1,000 more.
