Rumor: iPhone 8 To Feature 3D Facial Recognition On Front Camera
The mystical iPhone 8 continues to get rumors galore, this time claiming that the front camera will be capable of some 3D recognition.
The much-anticipated iPhone 8 doesn't seem to be able to go very long without a new rumor popping up about it. It wasn't long ago we were hearing that it will have three separate models and each will have wireless charging. Now the hot rumor — from the same source as the wireless charging one, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo — is that the iPhone 8 will have infrared transmitting/receiving modules alongside its front-facing camera. This would give the camera a bit of 3D tech that could theoretically be used in some interesting ways.
While things like 3D selfies are a possibility, the rumor points more towards things like advanced biometric authentication, i.e. facial recognition to get into your phone. Apple has acquired a number of firms and technology over the years that would help lend credence to the idea that they're at least working on this sort of feature. In the end, it's another rumor, and the only way to know for sure will be to wait and see. At some point you have to wonder just how many fantastic things the iPhone 8 will actually feature, and if a lot of rumors aren't merely the hope that its most talked about change won't be the removal of a headphone jack.
