Gameloft's Modern Combat Versus Soft-Launching Soon
Players will be forgiven for not knowing about Gameloft's Modern Combat titles. Even though the series already has five entries under its belt, there are still those who aren't aware that mobile phones and tablets play host to surprisingly full-featured first-person shooters. The fact that the FPS genre long ago broke onto mobile devices isn't surprising; what is surprising, however, is just how well Modern Combat pulls off the formula, and the latest title, Modern Combat Versus, looks to do it better than ever before.
As players might expect, Modern Combat Versus makes little attempt to hide its inspirations. Like with the Call of Duty series, the game sees players teaming up in tense multiplayer battles, taking down enemies and leveling up in order to unlock weapons, skins, paint jobs, and call signs. Players will also be able to choose from one of 12 different Agents, which are player classes that allow for specialization in skills like damage mitigation, stationary weapons, and high critical damage rates.
Unlike with other entries in the series, Modern Combat Versus will not be offering a single-player mode. Developer Gameloft has apparently opted to focus its efforts entirely on making a strong online shooter, an admirable goal that furthers the series' interest in becoming the big-name in mobile first-person shooting action. Additionally, the team has opted not to use any of the pay-to-win elements or energy system mechanics from prior games in the series.
For now, there's no set date for when Modern Combat Versus will be launching, but word on the internet is that Gameloft is planning a soft launch soon where players can check out the game's 4v4 Zone Control play mode. As always, stay tuned for further updates.
