Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition
The company's latest mobile title follows Noctis and friends in a chibi-style retelling of the FFXV story.
In what could be considered an uncommon move, Square Enix took to Twitch today to announce a new mobile game that retells the story of Final Fantasy XV in a casual, approachable, and more portable-friendly manner. Called Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, the new title is essentially a chibi-style mobile remake of Final Fantasy XV, following Noctis around the world of Eos in an adventure that duplicates the characters and story from the original game.
Square Enix themselves haven't used the word "remake," of course -- the game clearly isn't trying to condense the full FFXV experience onto mobile phones -- but the company has clearly stated that FFXV Pocket Edition retells the exact story that players can experience in the console and PC versions of the game. Here's the information from the press release:
"[Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition] is an all-new adventure that retells the beloved story of FINAL FANTASY XV, giving fans and newcomers alike the freedom to journey through Eos whenever and from wherever they want. The mobile game features the main characters and story of the console version and newly-announced FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION, with an adorable art style and casual touch controls optimized for mobile devices."
The press release goes on to say that the new adventure will play out its story across ten discrete episodes, and that players will be able to download the first episode entirely for free. Square Enix has also stated that all ten episodes will be available at launch, though they didn't say how much each episode beyond the first would cost. They also didn't give any specifics on launch date -- just that Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, which we assume will come to both Android and iOS, will be released later this year.
