Our favorite 37-year-old card game arrives on the iPhone. Uno!
Uno is a welcome distraction from all those poker and blackjack games. Gameloft's version of the timeless card game doesn't look as impressive as other iPhone apps, but it's easily one of the most addictive, thanks to well-designed touch controls, lots of options and most importantly, online play.
In Uno, the object is to get rid of all your cards before the other players. There are four colors of cards (red, green, blue and yellow), and you take turns throwing similarly colored ones onto the pile. It sounds simple, but the various Action Cards make things more difficult. These specially marked cards force players to draw two to four cards, lose their turn, switch the order (clockwise or counterclockwise) and change the selected color. Suddenly, getting rid of that final red card is a huge pain in the butt.
Gameloft does a superb job capturing everything we love about Uno, but ups the ante with touch screen controls (simply drag a card from your deck and drop it onto the pile) and online play for up to four people. It's a crapshoot as to whether people are actually online and playing Uno, but once you set up matches, you'll waste countless hours eliminating cards. In addition, the game has a Tournament Mode as well as a Custom Mode that allows you to tweak all sorts of options including difficulty, game mode, scoring type, penalties, Jump-in and 7-0.
When it comes to Uno, there's little to complain about. It lacks the graphical pizzazz of other iPhone games, but come on. It's Uno. So long as we can see the different colors, we're good to go. Whether or not you feel like paying $7.99 for it, however, is up to you. Our advice? Wait for a price drop.
What's Hot: Same familiar Uno, lots of options to tweak, four-player online, Tournament Mode, touch screen controls.
What's Not: Ridiculous $7.99 price tag, may take a little while finding players online.
