Follow the red balloon in Veiled Games' wonderful iPhone app.
Despite downloading new iPhone games every week, we always have time for Up There, Veiled Games Corporation's simplistic and addictive app that comes highly recommended. You'll see everything it has to offer within an hour, but you don't purchase this video game for tons of content. You buy it to get lost within its dreamy visuals, superb music and highly addictive gameplay.
To play, simply guide a red balloon from its birdcage out of a house, through the trees, past the clouds and into the heavens without losing it below the bottom of the screen. Each of the five levels presents a unique and challenging maze that requires you to quickly tilt the iPhone to direct the balloon through tight openings. The first level (the house) moves slowly, allowing you to easily move around bookcases. Things get crazy once you hit the third level. Not only are the tree branches longer and more difficult to maneuver around, but the game also moves significantly faster.
You accumulate points as you play, so most of the fun comes from attempting to beat your high score and then post it to the game's online leaderboard. It definitely makes Up There an exhilarating and at times maddening experience, as you'll curse when you lose and get a wonderful adrenaline rush whenever you reach a new level and destroy your previous score.
Complimenting the attractive 2-D graphics is a beautiful piano track entitled "The Joy of Sky". It's a great song that adds a touch of class to an elegant video game. We just wish the developers added more music. Hearing the same melody gets old.
That's our only complaint. Sure, it doesn't have as much content as other .99-$1.99 apps, but Up There is an immensely enjoyable and polished video game that belongs on your iPhone. Go ahead and let the balloon out of its cage.
What's Hot: Beautiful hand-drawn visuals, excellent tilt controls, surprisingly addictive, online leaderboard, catchy music, costs between .99-$1.99.
What's Not: Only five levels, one song.
