Dizzy Bee 2
Last year's iPhone hit gets a well-deserved sequel, complete with new levels and the always adorable Dizzy Bee.
When the app store launched last July, Dizzy Bee stood out as one of the best iPhone games and proof that Apple's device could hang with DS and PSP. Making excellent use of the phone's accelerometer, developer Igloo Games challenged us to maneuver a bee through a series of mazes, pick up fruit friends and reach the goal before getting devoured by enemies. It only took a couple hours to beat, but we loved the charming hero, cheery graphics and humorous buzzing noises. Now the sequel's out, and while it bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, it's a shining example of what the iPhone's capable of in the right hands.
Dizzy Bee 2 feels more like an expansion pack than a true sequel. Instead of changing locations and audio, its developers reused the same effects, such as the charming "Bzz Bzz Bzz" jingle. In addition, you still move between oceans and visit islands that contain a series of puzzles where once again, you must ferry smiling fruit to and fro while avoiding bad guys.
Although the basic premise remains the same, we still had a blast completing the game's new levels. Most of them are easy, but netting 100 percent completion took us quite a while, especially with all the enemy types and assorted hazards. The trick is using the environments to your advantage. Spider webs come in handy for trapping baddies long enough to finish the stage, while others fall in love (and ignore you) when grouped together. You also have invincibility power ups that enable you to destroy your foes. For the most part, though, it's all about momentum. Since you tilt the board (achieved by physically maneuvering the iPhone) instead of the bee, you can trap enemies long enough to grant everyone safe passage.
We would have preferred enhanced graphics and new music, but Igloo deserves credit for not messing with a winning formula. Dizzy Bee 2 is a marvelous follow up to last year's original game and a must play. Don't worry. It won't sting you.
What's Hot: Brand new levels, excellent tilt controls, cute characters, crystal clear audio, new enemies, power ups.
What's Not: Looks exactly like the previous game.
