Bobby Carrot Forever
Finding six golden carrots takes a backseat to wrestling with this game's sloppy controls.
Bobby Carrot Forever is an adventure/puzzle game hybrid that casts you as a random bunny in search of six golden carrots. To locate these divine vegetables, you'll need to solve a series of challenges and make use of various objects, such as a hang-glider to sail over rocks and a ride-on lawnmower that enables you to plow through weeds, all the while collecting normal carrots and gold coins along the way. Because of shoddy controls, the app quickly becomes annoying and not much fun to play.
You control Bobby by holding the iPhone horizontally and pressing the edges of the screen to make him move, so if you want him to go right, you press right and so on. That would be fine if doing this actually worked. Sometimes pressing left forces Bobby to go left, and other times it does nothing and he throws mean glances at us. In some instances this makes sense (he cannot walk over weeds, rocks and cacti, for example), but there's no reason for him to stand still when he's got a clear path.
We also dislike the misfortune of boxing ourselves into a corner and intentionally killing Bobby to restart. Again, sometimes this works, especially if we have the option of hitting a switch that enables us to exit through a back door. But then we run into those rare occasions where a mistake leaves us trapped between some spikes and a wall, and our only choice is to murder the bunny rabbit and try again, thus losing all of our coins and carrots from that level.
To its credit, Bobby Carrot features a satisfying amount of puzzles and attractive 2-D graphics. We dislike the game, but that being said, we appreciate the attention to detail on the environments, collectible goodies and even Bobby.
Sadly, pretty visuals aren't enough to save Bobby Carrot Forever. Imprecise controls ultimately kill what is otherwise a decent video game. Sorry, but we prefer this rabbit stewed.
[Editor's Note: We originally wrote that the game lacked sound effects. Upon further examination, we discovered that Bobby Carrot does indeed have the expected bleeps and bloops. Our apologies for missing this important feature.]
What's Hot: Cute bunny rabbit, some interesting puzzles, we love carrots.
What's Not: Inconsistent controls, aggravating music, it's called Bobby Carrot Forever.
