Catch a ride with a seductive temptress and unleash hell in this decent iPhone shooter.
Abigale is a horizontal shooter in which you play a hot chick that flies through the air blasting monsters and absorbing enemy fire. It's similar to one of our favorites, Ikaruga, in that the goal is to not only destroy bad guys but to also use their powers against them. While enjoyable to a degree, the action quickly grows repetitive, but for .99, it's a decent impulse buy.
If you absolutely need to know the back-story, the game has three pages of text, inconveniently presented in the smallest font possible. Ignoring all that stuff, you possess an item called the Mosa, a powerful weapon (acquired from the Dark Gods, by the way) that lets you collect enemy bullets. Snag enough of them and you can unleash the Mosa's power, where the weapon extends from your character and obliterates anything within the vicinity. As expected, it's a great way to clear the screen during those "oh crap" moments.
To play, you tilt the iPhone in whatever direction you want Abigale to move. The controls work well for the most part, but we would've preferred an option to adjust sensitivity.
We also want more diverse backgrounds. Although the scenery changes throughout the game's 15 levels, the designers reuse a lot of images that aren't visually stimulating to begin with. As a result, we grew tired of seeing the same old thing.
That also applies to the gameplay. Abigale is a decent shooter but it lacks pizzazz. As of this writing, the developers had yet to add a soundtrack (it's coming) and we found ourselves killing the same old enemies.
At the same time, it's hard to argue with the low introductory price of .99. For that money, Abigale is a fun arcade style shooter that harks back to the 16-bit glory days. Plus she's a large-breasted hottie with a witch's hat. That earns bonus points in our book.
What's Hot: Ninety-nine cent introductory price, 15 action-packed levels, visually stimulating graphics.
What's Not: Quickly grows repetitive, you cannot adjust accelerometer sensitivity, will sell for $2.99 after the first update.
