Handhelds Help Boost Videogame Sales
Take that Q1 Sales of 2004!
According to the latest figure sales by NPD Funworld, the videogame handheld market has helped boost total videogame sales in quarter one of 2005. Compared to quarter one of 2004, total sales have risen 23 percent. The handheld sector, however, rose dramatically. Both the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable are attributed to the 162 percent rise in hardware and software sales.
Almost two million handheld consoles were sold during quarter one, with the PSP and Nintendo DS being the most popular consoles (the former selling about 600,000 in this period). Some analysts have predicted the newly-released handhelds will help ease the transition from the current generation of consoles (Xbox, GameCube, PS2) to the next.
