Juke and spin to the end zone in this impressive pigskin game. Just don't showboat too much, or someone will break your player's pelvis.
With the NFL season in full swing, we're hungry for anything football, especially when it comes to video games. Enter Backbreaker Football, a fun running back app featuring brutal hits and cool moves. The best part? It only costs .99.
Unlike Madden NFL 10, EA Sports' full-featured football game, Backbreaker's developers focused on running the ball. You don't line up with a team and choose to pass or make the handoff. Instead, you play as a running back that must make it from one end zone to the other, dodging pesky defenders and scoring points along the way. Get hit, and you'll enjoy the game's impressive physics that result in the player landing in very unnatural positions.
Of course, you should do your best to avoid the contact, and that's what makes Backbreaker so enjoyable. When a defender appears, you can spin out of the way or juke by pressing the corresponding on-screen buttons. In addition, the game also has a sprint button that lets you pick up speed, as well as a showboating button that allows you to ham it up for camera and rack up lots of points. Just make sure you don't use it too long, as defenders will often appear off screen and make the tackle.
As expected, the game grows increasingly difficult with each new level. Instead of dodging one player, for example, you'll need to dodge two, then three and before long, four and five. Naturally, it's all in the timing, as you'll tap the buttons right before getting pasted and steer by physically tilting the iPhone.
Backbreaker benefits from smooth animation, satisfying gameplay (it feels great to juke someone) and a sweet 3-D engine that really shows what the iPhone's capable of. The players, stadium and animations look outstanding, and don't be surprised if curious onlookers peek over your shoulder to catch a glimpse of the mayhem.
Sure, it's a one-trick pony that eventually grows repetitive, but Backbreaker's great for short play sessions. Plus, it'll give you an idea of how tough it is being an NFL running back. For .99, everyone should download it.
