Receive a crash course in god training with ngmoco's upcoming App.
There are plenty of iPhone games that let you shoot bad guys and solve puzzles, but only a handful let you become a god. Ngmoco, the company behind Rolando, hopes to change that with its upcoming App called Godfinger, so named because all you need to play it (besides your brain) is a finger.
Godfinger's designers give you a planet to rule, and it's your job to gain followers and figure out how to harness its natural resources. Gaining these devoted worshipers is key to becoming a successful deity, as they'll help you grow stronger, acquire new abilities and perform natural wonders.
You'll do this by placing followers near shrines that cause them to worship. The more people that surround these shrines, the more mana you accrue; you need this to earn godly power to do all sorts of cool things, such as flooding, terraforming the land and even zapping folks with lightning blasts. You can even toss them around, if the mood strikes you.
In addition, you have the option of sending those followers to work on farms. As they toil away, they'll earn gold that you can use to purchase objects in stores; new shrines, perhaps. Just keep in mind that they might need some divine intervention from time to time. If it hasn't rained in days, for example, you can drag a rain cloud over the farm, tap to energize it and then unleash helpful showers that'll cause crops to grow.
What makes the game especially interesting is the ability to invite friends to the planet to work for you through ngmoco's plus + network; they gain experience for doing this. It's a novel idea, but we're a bit skeptical as to whether someone will leave his or her own planet to assist you.
Since you control the game through touch, ngmoco's done a good job making the world easy to navigate. Not only can you zoom in, but also rotate the planet 360 degrees and scroll around, all with just a couple swipes. The designers also earn high marks for making the zoom a seamless transition, letting you go from outer space to land in seconds.
Now it's just a matter of releasing the game. Thus far, Godfinger has a lot of potential and we can't wait to punish worshippers and bring the flood. Expect more info on this cool looking App in the coming month.
