Isaac Clarke goes mobile in this pint-sized Dead Space 2 prequel.
Dead Space Ignition is a terrible game that bridges the thrilling original adventure and the highly anticipated sequel, Dead Space 2. Thankfully, Electronic Arts put itself in a position to make amends with Dead Space for iPhone, which features impressive graphics and plenty of dismembered limbs.
Much like Ignition, this iPhone Dead Space serves as a prologue to the new game, except it's an over the shoulder, third person experience starring franchise hero Isaac Clarke, who blasts aliens while wearing his signature mining outfit.
In series tradition, the game features a minimalist HUD that displays Isaac's vitals on the back of his suit. This design opens up the screen, giving you a much better opportunity to spot Necromorphs before they strike. On the downside, having Isaac on the left side creates a blind spot that'll probably lead to a few sneak attacks.
To play, you guide Isaac with an invisible thumb stick and double tap the screen to perform a quick 180 degree turn. As for combat, tapping a Necromoph automatically instructs the character to target and fire upon that creature, while pressing Isaac's back lets you use different abilities, like Stasis, to your advantage.
From what we can tell, Dead Space for iPhone is more action oriented than the other games, so expect to dispose of several Necromorphs at once before wandering through another area and essentially doing the same thing.
That said, at least it looks incredible. EA has thus far done a wonderful job capturing the look and feel of the world on the iPhone, with plenty of blood, spooky corridors and detailed character models that made us do a double take. Clearly, Infinity Blade and Rage HD have some competition.
Now it's just a matter of getting the finished game in our hands, which should happen sometime next January. Expect plenty of info on Dead Space mobile in the coming weeks.
