Football Rush: Running Back
Kill the guy with the ball. Psst...YOU have the ball.
The Super Bowl is over, the championship parade completed and the jock straps washed and tucked away, but there's still more football to enjoy. This spring, Chillingo will unleash Football Rush: Running Back on both the iPhone and iPad, giving us pigskin fans a chance to go 100 yards to pay dirt while avoiding rivals and even pesky cheerleaders.
The game reminds us of the immensely popular Backbreaker series in the sense that you play as a running back, charged with sprinting across the field to score a touchdown, but the developers added some unique features to separate Football Rush from the competition.
First, it has 2-D graphics that remind us of those old school Madden games on Genesis, which should make retro fans happy. Second, and this is by far the most important wrinkle, you have three on-screen players instead of one, which gives you a chance to lateral to the guy on the left/right to avoid being sacked; get hit once, and the game ends.
Just because the game has three dudes, though, doesn't mean the computer can't drive their faces into the turf. Rivals and cheerleaders appear out of nowhere, forcing you to make split second decisions that involve passing the ball to the nearest (and presumably open) teammate and using turbo at the right time. In addition, you'll need to adjust to the tilt controls, though we had no trouble dominating by physically maneuvering the iPhone to run forward, back, left and right; it couldn't be more user friendly.
On top of that, the game comes with online leaderboards, as well as the ability to unlock new player with different stats, such as a guy sans shirt and a cheerleader.
Is Football Rush a Backbreaker clone? Sure, but it's a lot of fun, and the fact that it's a universal App ups the appeal. Now get ready for some football.
