Look before you leap in Chillingo's upcoming platformer.
To say there's fierce competition on the App Store would be a huge understatement. It's almost a guarantee that quality games have a plethora of clones, for better and worse. The release of PapiJump, for instance, spawned a small army of titles that challenged players to keep a character in the air, bouncing on platforms to ascend the screen. Chillingo apparently loved the concept, as the publisher designed a similar entry for iPhone and iPad called Let's Jump.
This game is essentially PapiJump with superior graphics. Players tilt the device left and right to guide a blob-like character to different platforms, where the goal is to climb as high as possible without plummeting into the bottomless pit below.
That said, Chillingo added some interesting features, including different types of platforms, with ones that give the character a boost and others that eventually break, forcing users to plan at least one step ahead.
In addition, players can race friends, though we're not sure how this works, and post distances traveled to a global leaderboard, something that adds a competitive edge. On top of that, this universal App works for both the iPhone and iPad.
The fact that Chillingo copied the PapiJump formula is no surprise, nor will it prevent us from playing Let's Jump, which is both attractive and enjoyable. We'll post a review shortly following its release.
