Spider-Man: Total Mayhem
Marvel's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man leaps onto the App Store in this attractive and fun superhero adventure.
If you're in the mood for a quality beat-em-up, especially one starring a certain web-slinging superhero, fork over the $6.99 and download Spider-Man: Total Mayhem for the iPad or iPhone. Gameloft's Marvel Comics inspired adventure features gorgeous high definition graphics, lots of bad guys to pummel and plenty of hidden goodies to unlock, making it an essential companion for anyone who daydreams about slipping into some red and blue tights and zipping through the air.
A few things make this game enjoyable, starting with the presentation. Gameloft did outstanding work bringing Spider-Man and his world to life, with eye-popping graphics bursting with bright colors that look incredible stretched across the screen. The game just has a wonderfully clean and razor sharp appearance. The fact that it runs silky smooth makes it even more impressive.
We're also enamored with the combat, which is old school, Streets of Rage style button mashing, as Spider-Man delivers a flurry of punches and kicks before unleashing a special attack that helps you achieve insane combos to vanquish the opposition. It's great stuff.
Meanwhile, the game has web-slinging segments that let you sail through New York City, sometimes hundreds of feet above the ground. You can even incorporate these acrobatic moves into the fighting, which allows the hero to do all sorts of cool moves.
You'll also run into six Spider-Man villains, like Sandman, Venom and Dr. Octopus. Each has signature abilities that you'll need to study and avoid to succeed. That said, nothing hurts worse than dying right before defeating one of these bozos. Thankfully, you can restart at the beginning of the fight; the game has a good checkpoint system.
On top of that, there's environmental destruction, as you're able to tear through potted plants, vending machines, park benches and hot dog carts. It's in your best interest to rip them to pieces, since they produce red orbs that, once collected, allow you to upgrade Spider-Man's abilities; fallen enemies also release orbs.
That said, the game relies too much on quick time sequences, where you must quickly tap a button or slide a finger across the screen to perform some sort of action. It's also buggy, as we had to restart after Spider-Man disappeared behind a wall. Thankfully, this only happened once.
With these complaints in mind, we still think you should check out Total Mayhem HD, simply because it's one of the iPad and iPhone's best action titles and one of the best uses of a superhero license. Follow your spider sense directly to the App Store and download this fun adventure.
