Mushihimesama Bug Panic
Become the ultimate insect exterminator in Cave's action heavy shooter.
You may not be able to pronounce the title or say it three times fast, but know this: Mushihimesama Bug Panic is one of the most frantic third person shooters on Apple iOS. It's the type of game that throws hundreds of bullets onto the screen, forcing you to dodge like mad and return fire or suffer grave consequences. You'll probably die countless times, but the short levels and fast-paced play will keep you hurling bombs for hours.
Part of the fun comes from the types of enemies you come across. As the name implies, Bug Panic is chock full of insects, so there's a certain satisfaction that comes from blasting them to bits.
In addition, the controls couldn't be simpler. You guide the hero, a young girl named Reco, using an on-screen d-pad, then use your other hand to paint targets with a cursor. Remove a finger from the screen, and she'll automatically chuck a bomb or more (depending on how long you press the screen) in the desired direction.
The game's developers also do an excellent job throwing tons of creatures your way, and they blow up nicely, leaving behind a bunch of loot to grab. Meanwhile, the levels are fairly short, which adds to Bug Panic's pick-up and play feel, but nothing hurts worse than croaking just before reaching the goal; the game restarts Reco at the beginning of the level.
The downside? You can't play Bug Panic on all "i" devices, and the game requires iOS 4.1 or later, meaning you'll need to upgrade before playing. Just seems a bit odd for something that resembles a Sega Saturn game.
Of course, that's a relatively small price to play for bug stomping bliss. Bug Panic's a satisfying bomb fest that looks sweet, even magnified 2X on the iPad, making it an essential purchase for shooting fans, especially those who grew up playing import games on their Saturn, Dreamcast and/or PSOne.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch (3rd generation), iPod Touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.
What's Hot: Lots of bugs to destroy, user-friendly control scheme, cute heroine, catchy music.
What's Not: Won't play on all "i" devices, requires an update, painful restarts.
