Burn the Rope
Channel your inner pyro with Big Blue Bubble's super hot puzzler.
Somehow, Burn the Rope slipped past our collective radar during the holidays, but we made up for lost time by downloading this thoroughly enjoyable iPhone game. Big Blue Bubble's smartly designed App challenges players to burn different pieces of rope, BBQing ants and beetles along the way. It's fun, attractive and well worth your dollar.
Each of the game's 96 levels tasks you with burning through a piece of rope. The more rope you burn, the higher medal you'll receive, be it gold, silver or bronze, but there's a catch. The flame only burns upwards, so it's your job to keep it going. Flame out, and it's game over.
To prevent the fire from fizzling, you must tilt the iPhone or iPad so that the flame always travels upwards, an easy task. Things get crazy, though, when there are multiple flames to worry about, slowly moving across complex patterns. You can snag a bronze for burning most of the rope, but if you aim for gold, the game's significantly more difficult.
Meanwhile, the developers throw multicolored ants into the mix, where burning a green bug, for example, turns the flame that color. Why is this important? You can only burn green rope with a green flame, red with a red flame, and so on and so forth.
Overall, the game's a lot of fun. The tilt controls work remarkably well, and the fire/burn effect looks realistic. Strategy wise, it's a notch below the App Store's best (Cut the Rope, which was done by a different group, comes to mind), but at $0.99, there's no reason to avoid Burn the Rope. Be sure to cough up the dough and get your flame on.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
What's Hot: A ton of levels, cool burn effects, excellent tilt controls, killing bugs, in-game achievements, only costs $0.99.
What's Not: It's too easy to snag the bronze medal and move on, not as challenging as other puzzlers.
