Get your frag on in this Angry Birds inspired puzzler.
By now, it should go without saying that if you release an outstanding game on the App Store, someone will eventually copy it. Case in point, Angry Birds, which spawned the equally entertaining Trucks & Skulls and more recently, Fragger HD, a game that replaces the kamikaze feathered friends for grenades. Chucking them is guilty pleasure, but the game's extreme difficulty and nonsensical mechanics make it a couple notches below the competition.
Each of the game's 160 levels, excluding the newly released holiday boards, task you with blowing up a set number of evildoers by throwing grenades in their direction. Doing this is easier said than done, since you have a limited number of grenades and each stage features different obstructions, be it platforms, caves or houses.
Similar to angry birds, you can plot a grenade's trajectory before release. Unfortunately, there's too much trial and error, where the game forces you to thread the needle by fitting said grenades into tight spaces or bouncing them off walls. Meanwhile, you lose grenades that travel off the screen, and walls don't take damage, which makes zero sense.
On top of that, grenades don't explode until they stop rolling, something you'll quickly learn the hard way. It's a novel concept that makes for some cool level designs, but it also goes against the laws of grenades.
Ultimately, the overwhelming frustration makes Fragger HD a huge pain in the butt. For each moment of brilliance (of which, there are many), we can name a ton of bothersome issues that make the game tougher than it should be. Sure, there's a lot of content for $2.99 and the App's enjoyable, but you're much better off purchasing Angry Birds or Trucks & Skulls.
Requirements: Compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.
What's Hot: A ton of levels, sharp cartoon graphics, excellent touch controls, solving tricky puzzles.
What's Not: Not enough destruction, grenades roll too much, very frustrating.
