Asphalt 6: Adrenaline
Put the pedal to the metal and destroy the competition in Gameloft's sweet looking racer.
Gameloft's Asphalt series has always been about fast paced arcade style racing, and the sixth installment, Adrenaline, is no exception. This gorgeous, feature packed and thrilling speedster comes fully loaded with 42 real world cars and motorcycles, a variety of attractive courses and plenty of options, making it the perfect compliment to the simulation heavy Real Racing franchise.
What separates this game from the competition is Adrenaline, a new addition that transforms your high-powered muscle machine into a battering ram, providing you collect enough nitrous to fill the meter at the top of the screen. Once activated, the car and environment take on this sweet looking shade of blue, but this is more than a cool effect. You'll have little trouble blowing past the competition and taking out vehicles en route to the finish line.
Beyond that, there's a wonderful collection of rides from the likes of Nissan, Ford, Mercedes, Bentley and Ferrari, all of which feature customization that lets you tinker under the hood, adjusting brakes, boost, handling and the engine, among other things; you can also adjust color.
Races, meanwhile, never fail to thrill, largely because of the variety of game types. You have standard races, Elimination (avoid being last when the timer expires), Duel, Under Pressure (avoid crashing), and that barely scratches the surface. Plus, winning is only part of the fun, as it is in your best interest to drive with style to earn cash to buy new rides and tuning kits.
It also helps that Gameloft included four control schemes to suit everyone's tastes. There's the expected (and preferred) tilt to steer method, but there's also an on-screen wheel and foot pedals, if that's your thing.
Meanwhile, the game looks sharp, especially the HD iPad version. Courses range from the tropical Bahamas to the French countryside, as well as Monte Carlo, New York City, China and Los Angeles, complete with short cuts and plenty of things to look at, from airplanes to sailboats.
Throw in online and local multiplayer, and Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is one of the best racers you can buy. We would have preferred more cars, but this is pound for pound one of the coolest games on the App Store. On that note, do yourself a favor and splurge on the $6.99 iPad edition.
