Nintendo 3DS: Where's Mario?
He missed the 3DS launch, but don't worry. A certain mustachioed plumber has a bright future on Nintendo's newest handheld.
Whenever Nintendo releases a new system, consumers expect a Mario game and for good reason. The two have gone hand in hand across multiple platforms, including the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and DS.
At least, of course, when he's nowhere to be found. Nintendo took a huge risk giving Mario's brother, Luigi, the starring role during the GameCube's 2001 debut, then had him missing in action for this year's 3DS launch.
That said, the publisher has big plans for its mascot, so if you just purchased a 3DS, rest assured that Mario is on the way.
On that note, these Mario games are in the works and should debut late 2011/2012.
Mario Kart 3DS
Nintendo's popular kart racing series returns, this time with snazzy 3D effects and 60 frames per second speed. Details are scarce, but according to multiple sources, characters not only look at opponents when they draw near, but also make different facial expressions. We've also heard that the 3D offers a new sense of depth, making it easier to identify objects. You know, like banana peels.
We know this much: Paper Mario is in development. Unfortunately, Nintendo refuses to discuss the game's story, though it appears to play similar to other games in the series, with turn-based battles and quick time button presses. We've also seen hints of 3D, as Mario can throw objects (like goombas) at the screen and change perspectives.
Super Mario Bros.???
This is by far the most mysterious of the Mario games. Nintendo's hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise, but it remains to be seen whether this title will follow the 2D side scrolling route of New Super Mario Bros. or appear in glorious 3D, ala Super Mario Galaxy. Expect more info in the coming months.
