War Pinball

A video game with Charlie Sheen and Chuck Norris? Winning.

Gameprom, no stranger to quality pinball games on the App Store, has struck again with War Pinball. Developed in collaboration with MGM Studios, this phenomenal iPad and iPhone hit blends classic films with fast-paced arcade play, wrapped within a presentation that gives Zen Studios' Marvel Pinball on consoles serious competition.

Three bucks ($0.99 on the iPhone) gets you three expertly designed tables based on the following war-themed movies: Platoon, Navy Seals and Missing In Action. Each table features artwork from the films, various props (attack helicopters, bombers, a submarine) and various little touches that add personality; we love the signs on the Platoon table that point to Hong Kong, Hanoi and Kansas, complete with distances to each location. Combine all of this with the iPhone 4 and iPad's high-resolution displays, and you're in for something special.

Beyond that, and with some help from MGM, the game also includes sound effects, quotes and music from these movies, and Gameprom could not have done a better job syncing the audio with the on-screen action. You'll hear gunfire and explosions whenever the ball ricochets off an object, along with words of encouragement or the exact opposite, depending on your performance. It's great stuff.

Then, as a surprise bonus, the game has an option for stereoscopic imaging, providing you have a pair of old school 3D glasses. You'll find this in the options menu, with three selections to choose from: red-cyan, green-magenta and yellow-blue. Nice touch.

OK, so War Pinball looks and sounds outstanding, but how does it play? Perfect. In-game missions, smooth play and tight controls put it in a whole other league. The fact that it runs without a hitch with the ball zipping all over the place is impressive, no question.

Now throw in online leader boards (both local and global), and War Pinball instantly becomes irresistible. It's a bit short on content (we'd love to see more tables, but pound for pound, you won't find a better pinball game on the App Store. Enlist today.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch (3rd generation), iPod Touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.
