Video Game Royalty: Kings, Princes and Princesses
Move over, William and Kate. Behold the rulers of gaming.
Just a few short hours ago, Prince William married the beautiful Kate Middleton in a ceremony fit for a king, then waved to thousands of happy Brits while riding in a horse-drawn carriage. Eat your heart out, Disney.
Now that the "I do's" have been said, it's time to party. The new royal couple will presumably cut a rug with their closest friends. Suffice to say, that's a cocktail hour we'd kill to attend.
Bottom line, it's all about the royals, so we dug into the history books to list some of the best kings, queens and princesses of the video game world.
Princess Peach (Super Mario Bros. series)
When it comes to video game royalty, no one commands our attention more than Princess Peach, leader of the Mushroom Kingdom. While a bit emotional, she's mild mannered and kind for the most part. Just don't get on her bad side, as she'll deliver a queen sized beat down in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Now if only she could stop getting kidnapped.
Bowser (Super Mario Bros. series)
Don't let the name fool you. Mario's arch nemesis was once known as King Koopa, leader of the Koopa race. Obsessed with taking over the Mushroom Kingdom and squashing Mario into oblivion, Bowser's quite the evil monarch. At least he takes the occasional break from world domination to race go-karts.
King of all Cosmos (Katamari Damacy series)
The tabloids would have a field day with this guy. Although he's the ruler of the universe (thereby squashing all video game kings and queens), he's a giant buffoon, constantly berating his sun and drinking heavily. In fact, he was once so wasted that he "accidentally" destroyed all of the stars.
Princess Zelda (The Legend of Zelda series)
Nintendo's second most famous princess is the ruler of Hyrule and more than capable of holding her own, either as the mysterious Sheik in Ocarina of Time, or as the swashbuckling pirate Tetra in The Wind Waker. We've also taken a liking to Zelda in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. She still gets captured from time to time, but she's smarter than the near clueless Peach.
King Bohan (Heavenly Sword)
When it comes to video game kings, Bohan is on the bottom of the list. This guy's the worst, abusing power to murder innocent people; he also doesn't appear to have the best hygiene. If you were born in his kingdom, move. Immediately.
Shao Khan (Mortal Kombat series)
That's Emperor Shao Kahn to you. Evil to the core, Shao Kahn murdered his leader and became the ruler of Outworld, where he commands a powerful army against all who oppose him. Disobey, and he'll probably take your soul. Obey, and he'll probably take your soul.
Goro (Mortal Kombat series)
What? How did Mortal Kombat's four-armed goofball make the list? Turns out, the guy's a prince. We always thought he was Shang Tsung's thick skulled lap dog. Go figure.
Princess Tomato (Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom)
She's plump, red and the primary target of Minister Pumpkin. Oh yeah, and you've probably eaten thousands of her closest relatives. There is no pizza sauce in the Salad Kingdom for obvious reasons.
King Dedede (Kirby series
Don't poke fun of Dedede's funny name or cute appearance, or he'll whack you with his hammer. Kirby's arch nemesis has it out for Dream Land and Nintendo's pink puffball, at least until a greater enemy appears, inspiring him to join forces with Kirby to save the world from destruction.
King Hippo (Punch-Out!! series)
We have to admit, the tropical Hippo Island looks like a swell place to live. All you do is sit in the sun all day consuming a variety of tasty treats. You know, like its rotund leader. King Hippo packed on the pounds, but he's still capable of squashing Little Mac into oblivion, so long as he can keep his pants up.
Lich King (World of Warcraft)
Forget about Bohan. The Lich King is without question the undisputed evildoer of video games, at least when it comes to royalty. If you see his undead army, chances of your demise jump 99 percent. Even cooler, he rules these dudes telepathically. Say your prayers, Azeroth.
Princess Daisy (Super Mario Land
Daisy, ruler of Sarasaland, first appeared in the classic Super Mario Land, where she was kidnapped by an alien named Tatanga. Since then, she's hit the Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and Mario Party circuit, where her royal highness rubs noses with the Mushroom Kingdom elite.
