Heroes Of Ruin Brings Social Networking To 3DS
Square Enix may revolutionize portable gaming with its latest project, set to debut in 2012.
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) a week away, Square Enix wasted no time making a splash by announcing Heroes of Ruin, a new adventure slated to arrived in 2012 for Nintendo's 3DS.
The game revolves around four unlikely warriors brought together to fight a common enemy. Players can work together through seamless drop in/drop out co-op, or venture alone through an ever changing fantasy world full of monsters and treasure. The constantly evolving environment lets them discover new routes each time they play.
What separates Heroes of Ruin from other portable titles is the social gaming aspect.
"Using the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass and SpotPass functionality, Heroes of Ruin will offer extensive multiplayer elements," said Mona Hamilton, vice president of marketing and public relations, Square Enix, Inc. "We hope to create a community of Heroes of Ruin fans who play well beyond the single player campaign and experience the story in completely new ways."
With StreetPass, Square Enix hopes to create a Traders Network where players buy and sell items acquired in battle.
On top of that, gamers can improve their characters' stats by taking their 3DS systems outside and passing other players in the real world.
As for SpotPass, the developers plan to reward players with rare items and challenges through Wi-Fi hotspots .
Finally, the Heroes of Ruin website will offer daily challenges to complete in-game, while offering a platform to meet other like minded people.
First reaction: extremely ambitious for a handheld game, but this could be the necessary shot in the arm the 3DS needs.
