Heroes of Ruin
Four heroes. One quest. Tons of loot. It's on.
Square Enix could have ported a Final Fantasy adventure to 3DS. That would have been a great way to test the proverbial waters while giving longtime fans something to look forward to.
Instead, the publisher took a much tougher road, electing to create a new intellectual property from the ground up and take the system where it hasn't gone before. Thus, we have Heroes of Ruin, an impressive looking and shockingly ambitious title that will either help revolutionize portable gaming or land with a thud.
The biggest selling point is online play (drop in/drop out co-op) with up to four people. Together, you and your fellow warriors explore a fantasy world infested with monsters and destroy an evil force that has cursed Ataraxis, ruler of the city of Nexus.
What ensues is classic dungeon crawling, as you partner with friends/strangers to kill bad guys and communicate via the 3DS microphone, plotting strategies and sharing tips.
In addition, the game supports StreetPass, allowing you to trade items. Even better, Square Enix plans to release new quests and weapons through SpotPass.
First, though, you must select one of four characters, each of which possesses unique backgrounds and abilities. There's the pistol firing, bomb throwing gunslinger, the sword swinging Vindicator, the spell casting Alchitect and finally, the Savage, an exiled tribesman that overpowers creatures with brute strength.
You'll be able to customize these characters from the beginning, changing weapons, armor and skills. Of course, there's no shortage of loot to collect from fallen enemies.
We just hope everything comes together. Square Enix deserves credit for trying something new, and Heroes of Ruin has a ton of potential. If the publisher succeeds, this could enhance the 3DS library while inspiring other companies to release more multiplayer focused games. Look for more info in the months ahead.
