As if arachnids weren't scary enough, now they mate with dinosaurs.
The concept of mashing a spider and velociraptor together to create some freak of nature is the stuff of nightmares, a creature so horrifying that most people would empty their bowels at the mere sight of it. Kill it with fire? More like kill it with fire, take off and nuke the entire sight from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Thankfully, by some grace of Darwin, this abomination...this...velocispider is one of the good guys. Not that we'd run up and give it a hug, but it's better than becoming food for its babies.
While on the subject of kids, the enjoyable iPhone and iPad App, Velocispider, casts you as the monster and then charges you with protecting its eggs from a bunch of ugly robots while enjoying 8-bit style graphics and music.
The game is sort of like a cross between Space Invaders and Missile Command. Enemies appear from the top of the screen and slowly descend towards three juicy eggs lying on the ground. Your job is to blast these enemies into oblivion, tilting the device left and right to make velocispider move.
On the positive side, you don't have to worry about rapidly pressing the shooting button, since the monster auto fires. You can, though, press and hold for a devastating charge beam, and pick up different weapon types left behind by fallen enemies that give the beast a spread shot and other useful toys.
Bad guys, meanwhile, come in various types, from little runts that swoop in to scary skulls that move horizontally. Then you have the enemies that attempt to steal the eggs. You'll want to kill them ASAP.
It's definitely a fun time that's made even better with the inclusion of Game Center achievements (a recent addition) and welcome bug fixes that improve the experience.
Factor in the aforementioned retro presentation, and Velocispider is one of the more addictive games you'll find on the App Store, despite the fact that it stars one of the most terrifying heroes in recent memory.
