Death from above.
We have to hand it to Limbic Software. The company's latest iPhone game, Zombie Gunship, is quite the guilty pleasure. The developers took the AC-130 missions from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and threw in hordes of flesh eating zombies. The result is one of the most addictive and intelligently designed titles we've played.
Whereas most zombie games put you on the ground (and in harm's way), this one has you safely hovering above a mountain range. Just because the undead are hundreds of feet away, though, doesn't mean you can relax. To succeed, you must keep the monsters from entering a bunker by any means necessary. If one breaches the gate, it's game over.
At your disposal is a small arsenal of powerful weapons, including the 25mm Gatling Gun, 40mm Bofors and a 105mm Howitzer, all of which help you turn those zombies into hunks of flesh.
At first, you'll struggle to repel the infinite number of creatures attacking en masse. The longer you play, though, the more gold coins you can earn that go towards upgrading the weapons, increasing the damage radius, bullet speed, fire rate and cool down time.
You can earn this stuff by playing the game obsessively over the course of a few weeks, or splurge on some gold coins with real world currency, spending anywhere from $0.99 (10,000 coins) to $49.99 (1.5 million) and various amounts in between.
Thankfully, the in-app purchases don't hang over your head, allowing you to do a ton of damage without spending extra cash; the game only costs $0.99. That said, you'll probably want to invest a few more bucks if you have aspirations of climbing the online leaderboard; the top player killed 171,680 zombies in one play through.
Overall, the game's a ton of fun. Not only is it cool unloading hundreds of rounds and bombs, but the presentation's top notch, bearing a striking resemblance to those Call of Duty levels; the App also looks great magnified 2X on the iPad.
Unfortunately, the weapon switching icons are a bit too close together, making it too easy to select the wrong gun in a panic. On top of that, it's almost impossible to rescue civilians surrounded by zombies. Since the game limits the number of humans you can kill, it's best to leave them alone unless you have a clear shot.
Issues aside, Zombie Gunship is a corpse blasting good time you should download immediately. Strap yourself in and give the apocalypse hell.
