Scene It? Pixel Flix Movies
A fun retro style trivia mash-up that'll impress film and video game buffs.
The App Store has a variety of Scene It? video games, including Harry Potter and Twilight. Now there's Scene it? Pixel Flix Movies, a wonderful marriage of Hollywood and 8-bit style graphics. The result is a game that'll appeal to fans of all ages. Even better, it's free.
In Pixel Flix Movies, the goal is to answer a series of questions by completing enjoyable mini-games, which brings to mind every Scene It? released since the franchise appeared in 2002.
What separates this title from the rest, though, are the limited number of lives you have to complete the round, and the boss battle at the end. You can even use four power-ups to gain the advantage, including ones that remove half the multiple-choice answers and another that freezes the clock.
You'll need that and more to tackle 60 trivia categories and hundreds of questions, intelligently arranged into those aforementioned mini-games that cover the proverbial gamut, from matching quotes with characters to watching a blurry image slowly come into focus, where answering in the quickest time possible results in more points.
Questions, of course, repeat over time, but that's what downloadable trivia packs are for. As of this writing, Screenlife released six of them, all of which are available for $0.99 apiece. We consider this a small sum, since it costs nothing to download the game.
On top of that, Screenlife also deserves kudos for the excellent presentation. This is what Scene It? would have looked like had it been released in the 80s on the Nintendo Entertainment System or even Sega Genesis, complete with chiptunes music to compliment the pixilated visuals. Fun stuff.
What's more, Pixel Flix not only has Game Center support (leaderboards, achievements), but is also AirPlay enabled, giving you and a few friends the chance to enjoy this title on a TV. It also works using a single iPhone or iPad, though we had problems figuring out how to answer questions. Definitely not a great multiplayer experience.
Unfortunately, the ill-conceived multiplayer keeps Scene It? Pixel Flix movies from perfection. It's more of a solo affair, but that's fine, since it's a great way to pass the time while enjoying the nostalgic presentation.
