Vita: Best Launch Games In PlayStation History?
If all goes according to plan, Sony's new portable will make one heck of a debut.
Although it's months from release, Sony has seemingly blown the doors off PlayStation Vita's launch games, confirming not one, but at least three to four must have titles for the sexy new handheld.
While not official by any means (beware the launch window), the lineup includes Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048 and Resistance: Burning Skies, and that's just for starters. We also expect a new Ridge Racer from Namco Bandai, along with some surprise titles leading up to the portable's early 2012 U.S./European release.
With this in mind, what do you think? Would this be the greatest launch in PlayStation history?
Check out Vita's launch lineup, then compare it to launch games from Sony's past.
PlayStation Vita (2012)
Launch Games: Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048, Resistance: Burning Skies, Super Stardust Delta, Hot Shots Golf, Little Deviants, Ridge Racer, Virtua Tennis 4, Sound Shapes, Reality Fighters, ModNation Racers, Gravity Daze, Hustle Kings, LittleBigPlanet, Shinobido 2, BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 Plus, Ruin, Top Darts.
Our Take: If Sony pulls this off, it would have the best launch game lineup since the Sega Dreamcast. Having Uncharted, Wipeout and Resistance available day one would be a huge achievement, as well as LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers. Nintendo, eat your heart out.
Launch Games: Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge Racer, ESPN Extreme Games, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Kileak: The DNA Imperative, Power Serve 3D Tennis, Raiden Project, Rayman, Street Fighter: The Movie, Total Eclipse Turbo.
Our Take: Ridge Racer blew our minds and Toshinden was a solid fighter, but these games won't compare to Vita's.
PlayStation 2 (2000)
Launch Games: SSX, Tekken Tag Tournament, Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore, Armored Core 2, Dynasty Warriors 2, ESPN International Track & Field, ESPN Winter X Games Snowboarding, Eternal Ring, Evergrace, FantaVision, Gungriffon Blaze, Kessen, Madden NFL 2001, Midnight Club: Street Racing, MotoGP, NHL 2001, Orphen: Scion of Sorcery, Q-Ball: Billiards Master, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2, Ridge Racer V, Silent Scope, Smuggler's Run, Street Fighter EX3, Summoner, Swing Away Golf, TimeSplitters, Unreal Tournament, X-Squad, Wild Wild Racing.
Our Take: A whole mess of games, but only a couple gems. Tekken Tag and SSX stood out, and FantaVision was an odd curiosity, but there's a lot of forgettable stuff here.
PlayStation Portable (2005)
Launch Games: Ape Escape: On the Loose, Lumines, Ridge Racer, Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, Dynasty Warriors, Metal Gear Acid, Need For Speed Underground: Rivals, NFL Street 2: Unleashed, Twisted Metal: Head-On, Spider-Man 2, Tony Hawk's Underground 2: Remix, Wipeout Pure, World Tour Soccer, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade.
Our Take: Solid overall. We thoroughly enjoyed Lumines, Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure, but come on. Do they hold a candle to Uncharted, Resistance and LittleBigPlanet?
PlayStation 3 (2006)
Launch Games: Resistance: Fall of Man, Genji: Days of the Blade, Call of Duty 3, Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Madden NFL 07, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, NHL 2K7, NBA 2K7, Ridge Racer 7, Tony Hawk's Project 8, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07.
Our Take: Resistance was a decent first person shooter, and once again, there was Ridge Racer. The PS3 launch games, though, failed to thrill. Genji was a huge disaster, and Call of Duty 3 was one of the series' weakest.
