Classics never die.
Eric Chahi's beloved 1991 platformer, Another World (known as Out of This World in the States), turns 20 this year, and BulkyPix plans to celebrate by releasing this iconic adventure on both the iPhone and iPad September 22, but this is anything but a simple port. For longtime fans, it could be the definitive version of a title that helped move video games one step closer to Hollywood.
Another World casts you as Lester Knight Chaykin, a physicist working on a nuclear experiment that goes awry, plunging the unlikely hero through space and time, eventually winding up on a strange alien planet.
Hunted by dangerous animals and a race of strange creatures, Lester makes a run for it, frantically scrambling across hostile terrain while solving puzzles.
Critically acclaimed for its challenging play, cinematic effects, audio and cut scenes, Another World quickly attained cult status and was ported to a variety of systems, including the Super Nintendo and Genesis.
Thankfully, the main adventure remains intact on iOS, though BulkyPix and developer DotEmu cleaned the game up. Although this title retains the original and simplistic visuals that became its signature, you'll also enjoy re-mastered graphics for both the iPad and the iPhone 4's Retina Display. You can even switch between the original and HD art style by putting two fingers on the touch screen.
What's more, the game now comes with two unique control schemes: touch controls, and classic d-pad.
How it'll play, of course, remains to be seen, especially with three difficulties. If you're a wimp, Normal is much easier than the original game. Difficult, on the other hand, is on par, while Hardcore is only for the most skilled and patient players.
Finally, the designers plan to add Game Center support, with 13 achievements to unlock. Our guess? These won't be easy to obtain.
The effort, though, should be well worth it. Expect a detailed Another World review in the weeks leading up to its fall release.
