Mario Kart 7's First Person Racing: Excellent Idea
New perspective should make a familiar experience seem fresh and thrilling.
Before playing a racing game, one of the first things we do is switch to first person mode. Although it's cool to view the action from a third person perspective, we feel going first person enhances the sensation of speed while offering a more realistic experience.
On that note, Nintendo made a wise choice adding a first person view to Mario Kart 7, set to arrive on 3DS December 4.
Mario Kart is one of the most beloved franchises of all time, but it's also one of the slowest racers out there.
Fair enough, since it involves go-karts over Ferraris, but we always have a need for speed. The new first person view will provide that.
Most importantly, it gives Nintendo a chance to pull the player into this detailed and gorgeous video game, particularly with flight, as gamers receive a wonderful view of each track.
As for the gyro controls, we're on the fence. Physically maneuvering the handheld doesn't work so well in Star Fox 64 3D, but so long as Nintendo lets us use the circle pad, everything should be just fine.
