Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack!
Serious Sam players are well aware of the Headless Kamikaze, the suicidal misfits that charge towards the hero, exploding on impact. You've probably mowed these suckers down by the thousands.
Well, now it's time to become these nut balls and exact revenge in Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! for iPhone and iPad. Available for $0.99 (introductory price), this title is the result of Devolver Digital and Croteam's Series Sam Indie Series, where the parties involved choose a developer and let the company create a brand new entry in the Sam franchise. In this case, the honor fell upon Be-Rad Entertainment.
What we have is essentially a runner, similar to past hits like Canabalt, but broken into short levels with specific objectives, be it kicking a certain number of frogs or destroying cacti.
Regardless of the challenge, the end is always the same, with the Kamikaze tracking down Sam and leaping onto its prey, resulting in body parts flying all over the place.
That said, the game offers a couple hours of frantic fun, as you press one button to jump, the other to attack, and by attack, we mean bicycle kick your way through objects while collecting 1-ups and other items that do a variety of things, from temporarily slowing things down to earning more points; you also hear the Kamikaze's trademark scream.
You'll always have more than one Kamikaze at your disposal, so when one of these freaks goes down, another takes its place.
Complimenting the addictive play, meanwhile, are hand drawn and pastel shaded graphics that set the app apart from anything else we've seen.
Unfortunately, Kamikaze Attack is a proverbial one-trick pony, and it won't be long before you've had enough kicking frogs and deflecting rockets. It gets old, and fast.
For $0.99, though, the game's worth a look, especially if you're a Serious Sam fan and get Croteam's special brand of humor, which Be-Rad captured perfectly.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.
What's Hot: Being a Headless Kamikaze, watching things explode, pretty visuals, Facebook integration, detailed stat tracking, $0.99.
What's Not: Objectives repeat.
