Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Mario battles Wario in his greatest Game Boy adventure.
After months of waiting, Nintendo finally got around to releasing Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, and we couldn't be happier. Not only is this a nostalgic game from our youth, but it's also one of the quirkiest, most enjoyable adventures in the celebrated Mario franchise. In other words, every 3DS owner should have it.
Why is 6 Golden Coins so sweet? For starters, it marks the debut of Wario, Mario's alter ego. Turns out, the overgrown man child has invaded Mario Land in a desperate thirst for power, prompting everyone's favorite plumber to set off through 32 highly entertaining levels full of goombas, koopa troopas and power-ups.
To that end, the game plays similar to most Mario titles with a few notable exceptions.
For example, the carrot power-up transforms Nintendo's mascot into bunny Mario, letting him jump higher and float for limited periods of time; this is the first and last game to feature this item.
We also love the option to replay previously completed levels, move both left and right (you can't do that in Super Mario Land) and collect coins to play games; grabbing hearts earns Mario extra lives.
Then there's the art style, which is more Super Mario World, right down to Mario's appearance, though Nintendo chose to mix things up with the levels. Our favorite? The outer space portion of the game, complete with Mario wearing an old astronaut suit.
It's just a wonderful platform adventure that includes much of what we love about the series, with new bits that make it unique. At $3.99, you have no choice. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a must play.
What's Hot: Wario's debut, 32 levels, bunny Mario, classic platform adventure goodness.
What's Not: A bit too easy.
