iPhone 4S: Why It's Better Than iPhone 5
Everyone was clamoring for a newly designed iPhone 5, but one developer explains why what Apple did was far better.
iPhone 4S and iOS 5 were revealed during Apple's press event this week, and the reaction from iOS developers has been overwhelmingly positive. That said, some investors and some consumers were disappointed after months of speculation that a new iPhone 5 would be announced.
In some ways, however, it's actually a good thing for game makers that Apple didn't overhaul the iPhone (other than its innards), explains Ed Del Castillo, President, Liquid Entertainment.
"The simplest I can put this, this is a much needed base strengthening move for Apple. The launch of iPhone 4S and iOS 5 give developers the much needed breathing room they need to keep up and with Apple on their devices. For example, if Apple had launched a full iPhone 5 with a new screen resolution and all sorts of new features that could be capitalized on by games, it would have been yet another platform to consider when developing for iOS. By advancing incrementally and keeping the resolution the same Apple:
1) Allows developers to have a more consolidated graphics strategy
2) Buys more time for deeper penetration of existing technology
3) Keeps from disenfranchising their base by making their tech obsolete year over year
4) Allows users of older Apple tech to step up to the latest resolution at a fraction of the price via the iPhone 4
"Of course, I was hoping for something more dramatic as a techie, but as a developer I'm breathing a sigh of relief that all the learning we've done on iOS is still valid and that we have more time to get deeper and more skilled on the existing hardware and resolution set.
"On iOS5: It's cool but we've known about it for a while. It is great to see Apple keeping its OS shiny (a place where lots of others have fallen down). Their commitment to their OS is an example of how they understand that software sells hardware and not the other way around."
What do you think? Should Apple have pushed forward with a new iPhone 5 design or will the iPhone 4S strategy prove to be wiser?
