Uncharted: Golden Abyss- Biggest Portable Launch Game Since Tetris?
Nathan Drake will step into the spotlight and (hopefully) dominate PlayStation Vita's launch.
Common sense dictates that consumers won't purchase a video game system simply for the hardware. They need at least one high profile game to go along with it.
That said, few launch titles have matched, let along surpassed, Tetris. The Game Boy version, released alongside the handheld in 1989, appealed to both hardcore and casual gamers, catapulting Nintendo's machine to superstardom.
Since that time, we've seen countless launch games that, while enjoyable, simply failed to grab us like Tetris. The Game Boy Advance had, pound for pound, the most comprehensive lineup in history, but its flagship game, Super Mario Advance, was merely a port of Super Mario Bros. 2. The DS, meanwhile, had Super Mario 64 (another port), while PSP had a bunch of cool offerings, none of which were killer apps; one could make a compelling argument for Lumines.
With this in mind, Sony's Uncharted: Golden Abyss is without question the most important launch game since Tetris, and for good reason. This PlayStation Vita adventure is a prequel to the beloved Naughty Dog franchise that has already sold over eight million units worldwide. It also debuts shortly after Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception for PS3. Providing that game achieves high sales, and there's no foreseeable reason it won't, those good vibes should carry over to the Vita U.S. and European launches next year.
On top of that, it's a gorgeous and smartly designed third person shooter that puts Vita's best features on display, including dual analog sticks, the touch screen, rear touch pad and gyroscope. Showpiece for the hardware, personified.
Bottom line, it's a beautiful and action packed Indiana Jones style adventure that should justify plunking down the dough for PlayStation Vita. We'll stop short of predicting a Tetris like impact (a puzzle game stands a better chance of uniting the masses), but compared to the history of handheld launch games, Golden Abyss has a chance to be just that. Golden.
