The imaginative DS series comes to the App Store and we can't pull ourselves away.
Scribblenauts and its sequel (aptly titled Super Scribblenauts) were huge hits with the DS community, and now you can experience a slice of these games on the App Store with Scribblenauts Remix for iPhone and iPad, which contains 40 levels from both titles, along with ten iOS exclusive stages.
Each puzzle challenges you to complete a specific task, whereupon which the hero, Maxwell, grabs a star and moves to the next board.
How you do this depends on the limits of your imagination, and this is what makes Scribblenauts so much fun. The game's dictionary (in tandem with the iPhone/iPad keyboard) lets you spawn a seemingly infinite number of objects to get the job done.
The first level, for instance, asks you to retrieve the star from a tree. We typed in the word "baseball bat", watched the item appear and then handed it to Maxwell. He took it from there, whacking the trunk, thereby dislodging the star.
That barely scratches the surface when it comes to possible solutions. We could have given him a chainsaw, or tossed a beaver on screen to eat through the bark.
That said, most of your enjoyment will come from experimenting with different gadgets, vehicles and even animals in the hopes of stumping the dictionary, but that's the cool part. It's almost impossible to do so within reasonable and tasteful limits; no "adult" toys or harsh language.
With this in mind, and as charming as the game is, most of the levels are way too easy. You'll breeze through Scribblenauts Remix in no time, with little incentive to replay those levels, aside from comparing your progress with friends via Game Center or beating your best time.
For five bucks, though, you'd be foolish to pass this one up, especially since there appears to be downloadable content on the way. Charming, intuitive and highly entertaining, Scribblenauts Remix is without question one of the best games the App Store has to offer.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
What's Hot: Fifty stages, unique concept, cute 2D visuals, Game Center and iCloud support.
What's Not: A bit too easy, too many levels from past Scribblenauts games.
